As any dog owner will tell you, there is more going on in between those ears than pack maintenance, food, sex and sleep. Get this. Swift Fantasy is one speedy pooch
This is the story of a greyhound who lopes along at the back of the field, looking for all the world like a goner from the start.
But then out of nowhere comes a burst of blistering speed and before you know it you're cashing in your winning ticket.
Swift Fantasy is her name and, as Close Up's Michael Holland finds, she's got everyone taking notice.
Now most of the dogs in the race are chasing the synthetic bunny but this dog has figured something out for herself. She has figured out that its not chasing the bunny at all, its a race. And so she has created a strategy.
The races she runs ar multiple laps of the track so she can count, she knows when the race is almost over and she knows that the only thing that matters is to be in front at the end.
Spo she hangs back, conserving her energy at the tail of the filed until the last lap from home, then she chops it down a cog, stamps on the gas and rips through the field, sometimes winning by 10 lengths.
Now she needs the speed and stamina stuff like any athlete, but somewhere in that head there is a concept of a race and I'd bet that even if the bunny stopped half way round the track, while the other dogs gathered around to savage it, she would just keep running.
Incidentally she was banned in Australia for "not trying". as of last night she had won her owners $55,000. God help the rest of the field if she ever does start trying.
