Jim Elve continues the discussion of personal branding on Branding Be Bloggered and raises this point.
The personal branding issue is valid. If it becomes a status booster to say that you are a weblogsinc writer as it is for NYT or Time writers, then the personal branding is enhanced by the corporate umbrella. I don't see that happening with a start-up.Three important words here, Status, Brand, Umbrella. John Le carre is a brand, a powerful one among fans of spy novels. His publisher Sceptre is also a strong brand. Le carre is strong because he can bring power to a publisher, but he wont go to a publisher that doesn't already have the power to make his brand even more powerful, the lever each other up, but only once both have passed a threshhold. Your status is related to your brand which can nest within another brand while standing outside it, a bit like a klein bottle.
We learn by doing and we do by talking by writing - about blogging. Love it.
